What do we believe?

In a world that is slowly moving away from biblical Christianity and confused with various conflicting teachings, Every generation of Christians have struggled to protect the integrity and purity of faith. Every now and then whenever threats to Christianity came up,  faithful believers from all over the world including different denominations would come together and make a statement of faith to summarize their faith. Such a statement was called a Creed.

Our fellowship goal is to prayerfully come up with our own Statement of Faith , we have discussed Nicene creed simply as a starting point.

Creed is a statement of Faith

statement of faith is

  1. a set of fundamental beliefs
  2. guiding principles of a believer’s life

In the olden days people used to memorize and recite these creeds in the church. In the process of making such a statement of faith for our fellowship , I realized that many aspects need to be covered and such a brief summary is insufficient to cover all the truths of the 66 books of the bible . Nevertheless there is profit in such a statement as given below.

statement of faith is profitable

  1. As a Table of contents that help us to further research in the bible
  2. As a clear boundary of truth against all false teachings.

Statement of faith was made to address false teachings

For example the Nicene creed was made in response to false teachings from a group called Arians who said that Christ was created out of nothing. That Christ  did not always exist, but was created by God and therefore inferior to God.

Statement of faith promotes unity

Knowing that all of us are in one mind in our beliefs about God is key to our fellowship and to our salvation

Previously we reviewed the Nicene creed as written below.

Nicene creed

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, light from light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father [and the Son],
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. [ Note this is not Roman catholic church but catholic simply means universal so the statement is saying one Holy universal and apostolic church]
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
